Medical Use

Azelaic acid usually complex with the arbutin in the formulation tech, .as a tyrosinase inhibitor, it reduces synthesis of melanin.

It used to treat mild to moderate acne.

It belongs to a class of medication called dicarboxylic acids. It works by killing acne bacteria that infect skin pores.

It also decreases the production of keratin, which is a natural substance that promotes the growth of acne bacteria.

Azelaic acid is also used as a topical gel treatment for rosacea , due to its ability to reduce inflammation. It clears the bumps and swelling caused by Rosacea.

Azelaic acid has been used for treatment of skin pigmentation including melasma and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in those with darker skin types.

Hair Loss Treatment

As well as possessing these anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, azelaic acid may also act as a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor. This, as we’ll see, makes it a potentially effective hair loss treatment.

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring substance that studies have shown to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase in human skin. 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone into dihydrotestostrone (DHT), accumulation of which in scalp is believed to be responsible for the male pattern hair loss. Inhibition of this enzyme by azelaic acid can reduce the concentration of DHT in scalp and therefore stimulate hair regrowth. Azelaic acid can be found in many prescription acne medications. Azelaic acid is added to minoxidil solutions because it has different mechanism of action in preventing hair loss. Finasteride is a synthetic chemical; it is one of two main hair loss treatments that works by a similar mechanism as azelaic acid.
